Vowel Lab I: Source/Filter Vowel Models

چکیده
So far, we’ve been considering filters as systems that we design and then apply to signals to achieve a desired affect. However, filtering is something that occurs everywhere, without the intervention of a human filter designer. At sunset, the light of the sun is filtered by the atmosphere, often yielding a spectacular array of colors. A concert hall filters the sound of an orchestra before it reaches your ear, coloring the sound and adding pleasing effects like reverberation. Even our own head, shoulders, and ears form a pair of filters that allows us to localize sounds in space. Quite often, we wish to recreate these filtering effects so that we can study them or apply them in different situations. One way to do this is to model these “natural” filters using simple digital filters. That is, if we can measure the response of a particular system, we would often like to design a filter that has the same (or a similar) response. In this lab, we will apply such system modeling to the signals produced when speaking vowels.

Vowel Lab II: Vowel Features
In Lab #7, we looked at designing low-order digital filters to model human vowel production. Why is this a useful technique? We argued that such models were useful for studying speech production and the like. However, there are more practical, applied reasons for doing this. Suppose that we want to perform speech recognition and determine which vowel is being said. A system would be hard presse...
متن کاملThe Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...
متن کاملEstimation of resonant characteristics based on AR-HMM modeling and spectral envelope conversion of vowel sounds
A new method was developed for accurately separating source and articulation filter characteristics of speech. This method is based on the AR-HMM modeling, where the residual waveform is expressed as the output sequence from an HMM. To realize an accurate analysis, a scheme of dividing HMM state was newly introduced. Using the AR-filter parameter values obtained through the analysis, we can con...
متن کاملThe Study of Vowel Space and Formant Structure in Mazani Language
Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...
متن کاملInfluences of Tone on Vowel Articulation in Mandarin Chinese.
Purpose Models of speech production often abstract away from shared physiology in pitch control and lingual articulation, positing independent control of tone and vowel units. We assess the validity of this assumption in Mandarin Chinese by evaluating the stability of lingual articulation for vowels across variation in tone. Method Electromagnetic articulography was used to track flesh points...
